Who else loves the Scream movies? I know I can’t be the only one. I watch that series in a loop all the time and I will never get sick of them. So when TLC Book Tours asked if I wanted to join in on the Instagram tour for JINXED, I couldn’t say no.

JINXED – Thommy Hutson
This is book one in the JINXED trilogy and I’m so mad I have to wait for book two!
My Thoughts: 5/5 stars!
When reading the blurbs on the book I was immediately sold on reading this. Comparing this to the teen whodunit that Wes Craven never wrote and that it is comparable to the nostalgia of the Scream series. JINXED by Thommy Hutson was that and more!
We are brought to a secluded island that is home to a prestigious arts school. Trask Academy of Performing Arts has a dark past – obviously. We start the book with a young student being engulfed in flames as the beautiful theater burns to the ground, and this sets the tone for the rest of the book. Fast forward over a decade later, and we follow Layna and her friends Nancy, Alice, Sydney, Crosby, and her boyfriend Max. All are seniors and preparing for their final performances and show cases for graduation, in hopes of being discovered. Spring break is starting and most students are leaving the island to go to the mainland, but this group, and Layna’s ex-boyfriend Dillon, are all choosing to stay.
The students are slowly being picked off one by one by a masked killer. The taunting mask with the familiar theater masks (the happy and sad ones). These are gruesome kills worthy of the Wes Craven slasher series this is compared to. All are involving the childhood superstitions we all grew up hearing – breaking a mirror, crossing paths with a black cat, opening an umbrella indoors, walking under a ladder are all ways to gain bad luck.
I don’t want to give away anything else and potentially ruin the twists. We have multiple other characters involved – the Dean, a teacher (and mentor to Layna), and an investigator that was brought in from the mainland to try and solve these murders and catch the killer. You go back and forth on who could be the killer throughout the novel. I thought I had it figured out, then that character would be killed. There was one reveal that I was expecting but that didn’t take away from the overall reading experience. The final twists though, was not anticipating that! I highly recommend reading the Epilogue at the end because more twists are to be had.
If you love the slasher films from the 90’s then you need to pick this one up. Not going to lie, I definitely heard the killer’s voice as Ghostface until the big reveal. If you want gruesome and unique kills, blood, and secrets galore, then make sure you have this on your TBR.
