#24in24 – Out There Screaming by Jordan Peele

Which is your favorite of the three? Get Out, Us, or Nope? We had a marathon this weekend, and it’s still super hard for me to decide which I like best. They’re all so good and scary in their own way. I know I liked Nope better after a rewatch but I think my most replayed one is Get Out.

Thanks to Random House for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

OUT THERE SCREAMING: AN ANTHOLOGY OF NEW BLACK HORROR Edited by Jordan Peele and featuring stories by: Erin E. Adams, Violet Allen, Lesley Nneka Arimah, Maurice Broaddus, Chesya Burke, P. Djèlí Clark, Ezra Claytan Daniels, Tananarive Due, Nalo Hopkinson, N. K. Jemisin, Justin C. Key, L. D. Lewis, Nnedi Okorafor, Tochi Onyebuchi, Rebecca Roanhorse, Nicole D. Sconiers, Rion Amilcar Scott, Terence Taylor, and Cadwell Turnbull (Released October 3rd, 2023)

This one released back in October, so it’s falling under my #24in24 list!

Book Description:

A cop begins seeing huge, blinking eyes where the headlights of cars should be that tell him who to pull over. Two freedom riders take a bus ride that leaves them stranded on a lonely road in Alabama where several unsettling somethings await them. A young girl dives into the depths of the Earth in search of the demon that killed her parents. These are just a few of the worlds of Out There Screaming, Jordan Peele’s anthology of all-new horror stories by Black writers. Featuring an introduction by Peele and an all-star roster of beloved writers and new voices, Out There Screaming is a master class in horror, and—like his spine-chilling films—its stories prey on everything we think we know about our world . . . and redefine what it means to be afraid.

My Thoughts: 4/5 stars

I’ve been sprinkling these in between blog tours, and I finally finished up on the 1st! You know, when it’s Jordan Peele, there are gonna be some incredible stories in here, and these authors did not disappoint. The variety in stories and writing styles made each one stand apart, and I found some new-to-me authors because of this collection. Honestly, if you see authors you like, love Jordan Peele, or want more Black Horror, then that’s all you need to pick up this book. Do it!

There are a lot of other reviewers that also loved this book and I highly recommend looking up the Own Voices reviewers on GoodReads or The Storygraph because I know the perspectives of Black reviewers will be more eye-opening in terms of lived experiences and perspectives.
