MURDER ROAD – Simone St. James (Released March 5th, 2024)

Book Description:

A young couple find themselves haunted by a string of gruesome murders committed along an old deserted road in this terrifying new novel.

July 1995. April and Eddie have taken a wrong turn. They’re looking for the small resort town where they plan to spend their honeymoon. When they spot what appears to be a lone hitchhiker along the deserted road, they stop to help. But not long after the hitchhiker gets into their car, they see the blood seeping from her jacket and a truck barreling down Atticus Line after them.

When the hitchhiker dies at the local hospital, April and Eddie find themselves in the crosshairs of the Coldlake Falls police. Unexplained murders have been happening along Atticus Line for years and the cops finally have two witnesses who easily become their only suspects. As April and Eddie start to dig into the history of the town and that horrible stretch of road to clear their names, they soon learn that there is something supernatural at work, something that could not only tear the town and its dark secrets apart, but take April and Eddie down with it all.

My Thoughts: 4/5 stars

Unexplained deaths on the same road over the years? Consider me intrigued, and I would like to think that I’d be the smart person and avoid that road at all costs, but curiosity and all I’m sure would eventually win. April and Eddie take a wrong turn and come across a hitchhiker and quickly realize she’s injured and rush her to the hospital. An investigation begins after she dies, and April and Eddie are persons of interest.

There was always something happening and new information being found. This wasn’t a slow police procedural or crime fiction novel. While you might be able to guess some of the connections and secrets we find out about April and Eddie, I don’t think that will take away from the overall enjoyment of the story. That ending was a wild ride, and I really liked some of the crazy moments on that road. This is why you turn around as soon as you can on a wrong turn or you have a map, written directions, or GPS up and running at all times.

Another incredible supernatural suspense from Simone St. James is here! I’d even say this borders more in the thriller genre than suspense. The pacing was quick, and pairing that with the light horror elements made this a fun read.
