#24in24 – The Fisherman by John Langan

What’s this? TWO books knocked off the #24in24 list in one month? Clearly I’m trying to make up for some lost time in ignoring the list. Think I’ll manage to get to the remaining 14 books on there? I’ll forever remain optimistic.

THE FISHERMAN – John Langan (Released June 30th, 2016)

I have a lot of friends that have raved about this book, so I knew I needed to prioritize it and include it on the #24in24 list. Otherwise it’ll get lost to the ever-growing TBR.

Book Description:

In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman’s Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other’s company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

Soon, though, the men find themselves drawn into a tale as deep and old as the Reservoir. It’s a tale of dark pacts, of long-buried secrets, and of a mysterious figure known as Der Fisher: the Fisherman. It will bring Abe and Dan face to face with all that they have lost, and with the price they must pay to regain it.

My Thoughts: 5/5 stars

Being on a boat and having fished, this would be an awful situation to find myself in. I’ve seen plenty of other reviewers compare to King and Lovecraft, and I couldn’t agree more. If you love cosmic horror, then I think this is the perfect one to pick up. It almost hits you when you least expect it and when it does, it’s equal parts enchanting and terrifying. This also crosses over into the literary horror genre and I need to start adding more of those to my TBR because I forget how beautifully written and eloquent horror can be (even with monsters, blood, ghosts, etc.). I have the utmost respect to these horror authors that can turn anything into a nightmare. I mean, if you don’t like being on water or in a boat, then this would already be on your list of “nope” situations. However, I sat there, on a fishing boat, reading this and I won’t lie, I checked over the side of that boat one or two more times more than usual. I completely understand why so many fans of horror continue to recommend this book. If you’re wanting to cross some off your list, then this needs to be on it.
