INCIDENTS AROUND THE HOUSE – Josh Malerman (Released June 25th, 2024)

Book Description:
To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?”
When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the same question, over and over . . . Bela understands that unless she says yes, soon her family must pay.
Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is on the brink of unraveling.
But Other Mommy needs an answer.
My Thoughts: 5/5 stars
So, while I do love Malerman’s books, the ending almost always ruins it for me. The Inspection will always be the best example, so I always go into his books with mild expectations. However, it’s hard to when I see glowing reviews from some close friends on IG.
Sometimes, books don’t always land right when from the perspective of a kid, specifically when talking about adult fiction (not YA). This was perfectly creepy in all the ways you want it to be, and it was exactly what I needed to pick up. I know some horror can be a slower burn, but not this one! I was instantly hooked, and, man, this had me turning on lights and looking around before entering rooms.
Oh, and Other Mommy? Big nope. The descriptions coming from the eyes of a child made her terrifying. This played out like a horror movie, and I loved it all, and the ending did not disappoint! So, if you want something that’ll have you all paranoid about your open closet door or what those little noises are at night, you need it.
