#24in24 – The Ruins by Scott Smith

Another one bites the dust on the #24in24 challenge! Getting to all of these older horror books has been fun and I can FINALLY cross this one off the list of horror you need to read. There are so many people that have raved about this book and I was really excited when I found such a nice hardcover at a used bookstore nearby.

THE RUINS – Scott Smith (Released July 18th, 2006)

While I have seen the adaptation, that didn’t ruin the story and the horrors that were waiting for me.

Book Description:

Trapped in the Mexican jungle, a group of friends stumble upon a creeping horror unlike anything they could ever imagine. Two young couples are on a lazy Mexican vacation–sun-drenched days, drunken nights, making friends with fellow tourists. When the brother of one of those friends disappears, they decide to venture into the jungle to look for him. What started out as a fun day-trip slowly spirals into a nightmare when they find an ancient ruins site . . . and the terrifying presence that lurks there.

My Thoughts: 5/5 stars

I can’t believe this one took so long to get to, but I’m happy I’m finally getting some horror crossed off the list! I actually watched the movie first, not realizing that it was the same thing. This was very recent, too. I know Chandra was shocked that I hadn’t seen it yet.

These characters, all of them were awful. Not a likeable one in the bunch, and all of them are assholes. However, I think that helped me enjoy the horrors that happened to them even more. I loved the vivid descriptions of the horrible things that occur, and I think this is more psychological horror as everything slowly creeps up on you. Mother Nature is not one to fuck with and this book is the best illustration of that – nature is beautiful but it can be cruel and terrifying. Loved this book so much, and as far as adaptations go, this one wasn’t too bad!
