POCKET FULL OF TEETH – Aimee Hardy (Releasing September 13th, 2024)

Book Description:
The police have some questions for Eddy Sparrow. Questions about a body found at the bottom of a well. As she answers the officer’ s questions, she mentions a mysterious manuscript hidden in her recently deceased mother’s desk drawer. The manuscript is about a young girl named Cat who returns home after her own mother’ s death to find her house haunted. As Eddy reads Cat’ s story, her own secrets emerge, and she begins to experience strange wet footprints, phantom phone calls, and nightmares. But a book couldn’ t be haunted. At least that’ s what Eddy tells herself. As her life slowly unravels, Eddy realizes that her life is inextricably connected to Cat’ s story, but can she save Cat and come to terms with the secrets haunting her or will they consume her until there is nothing left?
My Thoughts: 5/5 stars
I have to admit, I checked out a couple of reviews, and I saw someone say it was a much more approachable House of Leaves. It’s no secret that I loathe that book – so I was worried this would be similar in style. Absolutely not! I couldn’t put this book down. The multigenerational story that gives us numerous POVs is engrossing and full of witchy and southern gothic horror goodness.
I think this is one of the more uniquely told books I’ve read in a while! Starting off with a police transcript of Eddy being questioned by the cops about a dead body. Along the way, we get a taste of everything from interview transcripts, diary entries, a fascinatingly cursed manuscript, news articles and their footnotes, and my favorite one, through fairy tales.
The setting, the characters, the emotion, the writing style. The dysfunction and frustration that comes with complicated mother/daughter relationships. This was all I hoped it would be and more!
