I wish I could have gotten a better photo, but the opportunities on a road trip are sometimes limited!

Thank you to the author for the gifted copy

GHOST TRAIN – Natalie Anne Jacobsen (Released October 15th, 2024)

Book Description:

In 1877 Kyoto during the Meiji Restoration Era, Maru Hosokawa, a samurai’s daughter, encounters ghosts, mysteries, and a kitsune who offers her help in exchange for confronting a demon, as she navigates the challenges of a changing world.

My Thoughts: 4/5 stars

Do you know much about the Meiji Restoration Era of the late 1800s Kyoto? No? Well, have no fear, the incredible research and meticulous detail put into this book will teach you without feeling like a textbook. When I say this was well researched, I dont even think that does it justice. Literally dropped into Kyoto in 1877 with Maru as she tries to navigate a changing landscape AND confront demons.

I love me some folklore, especially from cultures I may not know much about. This book gave me that and more. The glossary in the back was a fabulous addition because its accessible and eliminated the pausing to look up what things mean or their cultural significance.

Incredible world building, rich folklore and history, well developed characters, and demons. Prepare for a real treat – just know it moves on the slower side at the start (I always love knowing to adjust expectations or if you’re a mood reader) I highly recommend to fans of historical fiction, magical realism, or horror on the less extreme end of the spectrum!
