At Dark, I Become Loathsome – Eric LaRocca

It’s no secret that I’m a massive fan of LaRocca’s and the covers never disappoint! I’m so excited about this new one and can’t wait for others to read it as it seems pretty polarizing (as it is with most of his books).

Thank you to the author and Blackstone Publishing for the giveaway win!

Book Description:

“If you’re reading this, you’ve likely thought that the world would be a better place without you.”

A single line of text, glowing in the darkness of the internet. Written by Ashley Lutin, who has often thought the same—and worse—in the years since his wife died and his young son disappeared. But the peace of the grave is not for him—it’s for those he can help. Ashley has constructed a peculiar ritual for those whose desire to die is at war with their yearning to live a better life.

Struggling to overcome his own endless grief, one night Ashley finds connection with Jinx—a potential candidate for Ashley’s next ritual—who spins a tale both revolting and fascinating. Thus begins a relationship that traps the two men in an ever-tightening spiral of painful revelations, where long-hidden secrets are dragged, kicking and screaming, into the light.

Only through pain can we find healing. Only through death can we find new life

My Thoughts: 3/5 stars

“If you’re reading this, you’ve likely thought that the world would be a better place without you.” A simple sentence that Ashley Lutin discovered resonated with numerous people online. Ashley is experiencing extreme grief after the death of his wife and the disappearance of his son. Life feels hopeless, but he’s not ready to go just yet.

There’s a ritual he’s developed to help people cope, and he offers his services. How far are you willing to go and let a stranger do to help ease the pain of wanting to die yet live a full life. I can tell you right now that I wouldn’t be allowing any of this. Any part of this ritual is a resounding no from me. Jinx, however, seems to be the perfect candidate after some communication with Ashley.

The details the men divulge about their lives and the events within are ones that will stick. I’ll say it now, this is a bleak and dark book. You feel the grief and pain just dripping off the pages and in such a beautifully written way – as you can always expect from LaRocca.

If you’re already a fan of the author, then you know what you’re getting yourself into. If you’re new to the author – get ready for a visceral read with gore and emotion. Was this my favorite by LaRocca? Probably not. Would I recommend it? Absolutely! I can’t wait for the next one!
