After loving and devouring the Midnight Manor series from P. Rayne, I was so excited to get my hands on RUINING HATTIE. Let me tell you, this one did not disappoint! That prologue-they really pull on your heartstrings and set the stage for the horrible upbringing Bast endured. Also helps explain why his sole mission in life is to exact revenge however he can against his mother. His life changes dramatically after meeting a man, Trent Clarke, who would become is mentor, while picking pockets because his mother couldn’t provide for him. He learned out to leverage power and built himself into a man of success and one with a reputation of violence.
When he decides to find the mother that never provided for him or even cared to look for him after he left, he finds that she’s not the drug addicted shell of a woman he remembered, but she now has the perfect life everyone dreams of. Married, white picket fence, goes to church every Sunday, and has the perfect stepdaughter, Hattie. How can he exact his revenge? Well, obviously by going after sweet and innocent Hattie.
Hattie is a church-going young lady who never disobeyed or caused trouble. After a bad experience with an ex, she understandably, has a hard time trusting and opening up to people. Bast finds a way to weave himself into her life and so begins their story and his obsession with her. What started as a story of revenge turned into a story of them learning to trust each other and acting on emotions they didn’t expect. I really liked seeing Hattie come into her own and grow confident in who she is throughout the book. P. Rayne is incredible at creating these characters you really grow attached to and care about. Of course, this is a dark romance, so there are trigger warnings galore and some violence. I recommend checking out the list before starting if that is something you are concerned about!
