DON’T TRUST MOTHER – Carey Baldwin (Released July 22nd, 2025)

Book Description:
She says I’m her daughter… She’s lying, right?
My life was perfect—with a handsome, loving husband, a beautiful home and devoted family who gave me everything I could ever have wanted. Until she knocked on my door.
There on the porch, I see a woman who looks just like me. I almost believe her when she says seven words that turn my world upside down: “I’m Sandra Steele. And I’m your mother.”
She’s lying. She must be. My real mother died in an accident. But the police have started asking questions. And now this woman is here… was she involved?
I go cold all over. She bites her lip, just like I do when I’m nervous. She knows things only a birth mother would know. But there are holes in her stories, and her accent doesn’t match where she says she’s from.
I don’t trust her. But I already have a plan… I’ll get to know her. Pretend I don’t notice the little lies, so I can uncover the truth of who she is, and why she’s here.
Because she’s hiding something… But so am I.
My Thoughts – Still reeling from the death of her mother, Ivy is trying to pick up the pieces of her life. Her mother, Patsy, died in a horrible car crash just six months ago and everyone around her is trying to force her to get over it as quickly as possible. Her husband wants to keep her medicated, rather than going to a counselor (I don’t about you, but that’s a massive red flag), and her father, who is wealthy and well-known in the community, can’t be seen with a daughter that is falling apart. Have to keep up appearances, obviously. Ivy stays home and sometimes takes the pills that her husband continues to feed her, then one day, there’s a knock at the door and everything changes.
Sandra claims to be Ivy’s biological mother and that she was given up for adoption as a baby. She tells her that she knew Patsy was going to come clean and tell Ivy everything, but she never got the opportunity to. There’s a whole life that Ivy never knew she could have had and even a half-brother. Initially, the pace is a little on the slow side, however when the pace picks up about half way through, then it doesn’t stop. I thought I had everything figured out right away as a frequent flyer with the domestic drama/suspense genre, but I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn’t completely right. Not a single character was likeable to me, but that’s never a bad thing. The twisty parts seemed unbelievable at times, but this is fiction, it’s to be expected. This was my first book from this author and it definitely will not be my last!
