THE EXECUTIONERS THREE – Susan Dennard (Released August 26th, 2025)

You can see my thoughts on her other book, THE LUMINARIES, here!

Book Description:

From New York Times bestselling author Susan Dennard comes The Executioners Three, a mystery filled with rivalry, romance, best friends, and a gruesome curse that dates back centuries.

Freddie Gellar didn’t mean to get half the rival high school arrested. She’d simply heard shrieks coming from the woods, so she’d called the cops like any good human would do. How was she supposed to know it was just kids partying?

Except the next day, a body is found. And while the local sheriff might call it suicide, Freddie’s instincts tell her otherwise. So, like the aspiring sleuth (and true X-Files aficionado) she is, Freddie sets out to prove there’s a murderer at large.

My Thoughts: 4/5 stars

Susan Dennard is the author of The Luminaries series that I absolutely love, so as soon as I saw this book I knew I needed it on my TBR. What I love about Dennard’s writing is how beautifully it flows and how in-depth and elaborate everything is without feeling bogged down with unnecessary details. The characters always come to life and you connect to them almost instantly and become invested in the mystery at hand. This one will make you crave fall and October, for those who aren’t already.

The Halloween festival in a small town sets the perfect scene for a prank war between rival schools. A town where everyone knows everyone, and their business, can make for some messy situations and some deeply buried secrets. Who would have guessed a prank war could turn out to be deadly – or was the body unrelated? Freddie is determined to find out and prove it wasn’t a suicide.

Despite this being YA, I was honestly impressed with how scary some parts got. There’s the perfect balance between the horror/supernatural elements and the lighthearted nostalgic walk through the late 90s. I loved all of the references, and Freddie was an absolute delight. Determined to get to the bottom of the murders all while keeping true to her quirky self.
