My Thoughts: 4/5 stars
I’m not sure which collection I loved more. One side, Merciless Sun, is a collection of daylight horror and when you flip over the book you get, Dreadful Dark, a collection of nighttime horror. The LINE UP of authors is insane. Some incredible horror authors for both sides. We have Eric LaRocca, Stephen Graham Jones, Clay McLeod Chapman, Rachel Harrison, Sophie White, Josh Malerman, and many more. It’s hard to say which half I loved more.
Some standouts are Secret Night, The Night House, Faiere, We Take Our Skin Off in the Dark, and A Trick of the Light. It’s hard to limit them but those would be top 5 for sure. If you’re a fan of short stories and anthologies, then Ellen Datlow always delivers. We got a wide variety of the types of horror and that always makes me happy. Same overarching theme, but there can be SO MANY incredible angles and interpretations. This also helps me find some new-to-me horror authors. While we know there are plenty of creepy things that happen in the dark, the daylight horror stories brought a whole new string of things to worry about that could be lurking.
This is perfect for getting into the fall spirit and has all the Halloween season vibes you could ever want. Keep September full of horror!
