The cover. This would be a total cover buy for me if I saw it in the bookstore. Soup, meat, eyeballs? I must know more.

FUTILITY – Nuzo Onoh (Releasing October 21st, 2025)

Book Description:
Chia runs one of the best restaurants in Abuja, Nigeria, and is renowned among the male clientele for her captivating beauty—she is every man’s dream woman—and delicious hot pepper soup. But her hot pepper soup has a secret ingredient, and her beauty is not what it seems…
Claire is a 50 year-old British woman living in Abuja with her young Nigerian boyfriend and his beautiful cousin, Shadé. Consumed by jealousy and resentment and blinded to the poisonous tendencies of her beloved son, after a night out at Chia’s infamous restaurant, Claire’s carefully organised life spirals into chaos…
Both women seethe with rage and bitterness, and when a trickster spirit offers them revenge on those who have wronged them, they cannot resist…
Crackling with wit, this is a blood-soaked, expletive-laden, vengeance-filled horror story. Satirical, twisty and murderous, this is bloody, deadly fun from a writer at the top of her game.
My Thoughts: 5/5 stars
The “Queen of African Horror” did not disappoint me. This was my introduction to Nuzo Onoh and this will not be my last book of hers. Do you like stories of revenge? Unhinged characters? Some blood and gore? Pieces of folklore? Well, this is the book for you. I know this won’t be for everyone because the characters are as equally over the top as the events that unfold. I was invested from start to finish and had a great time. The Nigerian setting was beautiful and came to life and I loved learning about African folklore (I’m a sucker for folklore). I’ll tell you right now, these women, Chia and Claire, are so awful and unlikeable but I couldn’t get enough of them.
Chaotic, bloody, mild touches of cannibalism, full of feminine rage and dark humor, terrible men, and takes a good look at the beauty standards women face. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be giving soup a side eye from now on.
