About once a month – unless life gets too busy – I meet with my book club. Four of us that love books and use it as an excuse to drink, watch the movie adaptation, and buy more books! Yesterday we discussed AMERICAN PSYCHO (my choice) and then watched Christian Bale’s spiral into madness.
We have a routine. All meet at Katie’s (Jeremy’s aunt) and then we go to Half Price Books and Barnes & Noble to find books and pick out the next read. Obviously my book buying isn’t limited to just the next selection. We did end up picking THE PRINCESS BRIDE 🙂 So excited!
I just happened to grab just a couple others….
What did Jessica buy this time?
WISE GUY by Nicholas Pileggi: (The film Goodfellas is based off this book – my favorite movie!)
“Wiseguy” is Nicholas Pileggi’s remarkable bestseller, the most intimate account ever printed of life inside the deadly high-stakes world of what some people call the Mafia. “Wiseguy” is Henry Hill’s story, in fascinating, brutal detail, the never-before-revealed day-to-day life of a working mobster – his violence, his wild spending sprees, his wife, his mistresses, his code of honor.
RED DRAGON by Thomas Harris:
Will Graham stands in a silent, empty house communing with a killer. An FBI instructor with a gift for hunting madmen, Graham knows what his murderer looks like, how he thinks, and what he did to his victims after they died. Now Graham must try to catch him. But to do it, he must feel the heat of a killer’s brain, draw on the macabre advice of a dangerous mental patient, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, and follow a trail of microscopic clues to the place where another family has already been chosen to die–and where an innocent woman has found the Dragon first.
STRANGERS by Dean Koontz:
They were strangers…..
A handful of people, from different backgrounds, living in different towns and cities across America, they had nothing in common – except fear.
They were victims….
Cold and stark, an unknown terror gripped their dreams and turned their days into living nightmares.
They were chosen….
And they could not escape. Deep in the heart of a sprawling desert, a dark memory called out to them, drawing them to the Tranquility Motel – where the terrifying truth was waiting.
THE WRONG QUARRY by Max Allan Collins:
A HIT. AND A MISS.
Quarry doesn’t kill just anybody these days. He restricts himself to targeting other hitmen, availing his marked-for-death clients of two services: eliminating the killers sent after them, and finding out who hired them…and then removing that problem as well.
So far he’s rid of the world of nobody who would be missed. But this time he finds himself zeroing in on the grieving family of a missing cheerleader. Does the hitman’s hitman have the wrong quarry in his sights?
QUARRY’S VOTE by Max Allan Collins:
ASK NOT WHO YOU CAN KILL FOR YOUR COUNTRY
Now retired and happily married, Quarry turns down a million-dollar contract to assassinate a presidential candidate. It’s not the sort of assignment you can just walk away from without consequences — but coming after Quarry has consequences, too.
CEMETERY GIRL by David Bell:
Four years after Tom and Abby’s 12-year-old daughter vanishes, she is found alive but strangely calm. When the teen refuses to testify against the man connected to her disappearance, Tom decides to investigate the traumatizing case on his own. Nothing can prepare him for what he is about to discover.
CHARLIE, PRESUMED DEAD by Anne Heltzel:
In Paris, family and friends gather to mourn the tragic passing of Charlie Price—young, handsome, charming, a world-traveler—who is presumed dead after an explosion. Authorities find only a bloodied jacket, ID’d as Charlie’s. At the funeral, two teens who are perfect strangers, Lena Whitney and Aubrey Boroughs, make another shocking discovery: they have both been dating Charlie, both think Charlie loved them and them alone, and there is a lot they didn’t know about their boyfriend. Over the next week, a mind-bending trip unfolds: first in London—then in Mumbai, Kerala, and Bangkok, the girls go in search of Charlie. Is he still alive? What did their love for him even mean? The truth is out there, but soon it becomes clear that the girls are harboring secrets of their own.
No one knows whom to trust in this thrilling tale of suspense and deception.
HORRORSTOR by Grady Hendrix:
Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking.
To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.
A traditional haunted house story in a thoroughly contemporary setting, Horrorstör comes packaged in the form of a glossy mail order catalog, complete with product illustrations, a home delivery order form, and a map of Orsk’s labyrinthine showroom.
So excited to have some new editions to replace old ones, and to get new books for the shelves! I shouldn’t be allowed into Half Price Books, but when they’re so inexpensive I can’t feel guilty about it!
