More releases for August 1st – and they keep getting better!
Thanks to HMH Books for the copy in exchange for my honest review.
THE DARK NET by Benjamin Percy (out now!) is a dark technological thriller and it is also one of our #allthebookreviews selections for August 🙂
My Thoughts: 4/5 stars!
The internet is an amazing thing. The conveniences it provides us with on a daily basis, enabling communication, and more. We always forget that there is a dark side to the internet. THE DARK NET by Benjamin Percy brings readers into this dark side and illustrates for us both the tame and extreme ends of it.
What is the Dark Net? This is the side of the internet where everyone is anonymous and where criminal activity can occur. This can be anything from managing Bitcoins, pirating movies/music/programs, or it can be trafficking in drugs or stolen items. When a darkness begins to gather in this corner of the internet, it’s force is threatening to take over and spread virally into the world. We have four main characters: Hannah, Lela, Mike Juniper, and Derek. This unlikely group must come together to try and stop this darkness from spreading.
Hannah, twelve years old, is blind. She is then fitted with the newest technology to fix her blindness – a visual prosthetic called the Mirage. Lela is a technophobic journalist and she has just stumbled upon a story that would be better left buried. Mike Juniper, a one-time child evangelist who suffers from personal and literal demons, has an arsenal of weapons stored in the basement of the homeless shelter he runs. Then you have Derek, a hacker with a cause, believes himself a soldier of the Internet, part of a cyber army – something similar to Anonymous.
Based on the synopsis of this book, I was anticipating more of a horror book. While there wasn’t much horror to this one, there was a paranormal element that I wasn’t expecting, but that wasn’t a bad thing! There were some seriously creepy and spine-tingling moments in this book. You know it’s a good thriller when the entire story has that feeling of something lurking behind you or watching you.
These four characters seem like they wouldn’t be able to mesh well with each other, but Percy does an incredible job weaving their stories together. If you want a fast-paced techno-thriller with a paranormal twist, then this is the next book you need to pick up this summer!
August is off to a great start so far! Anyone else intrigued by these thrillers surrounding the dark side of the internet?
