GOOD ME BAD ME by Ali Land is out today (September 5th)
Check back tomorrow to see what my readers in crime thought for our #CJSReads collective reviews 🙂
My Thoughts: 4.5/5 stars!
With the synopsis starting with, “Milly’s mother is a serial killer.” instantly drew me in! GOOD ME BAD ME by Ali Land is everything I was hoping it would be! I couldn’t put this one down and you’re pulled straight into Milly’s mind. I will say, there are topics that not all readers will want to experience (child abuse, sexual assault, and bullying) but these are captured in flashbacks rather than full chapters.
We begin the story with Milly. She’s being admitted into the foster care system after turning in her mother. Her mother is a serial killer. Milly is in a loving home now with what seems to be a picture perfect life. As she waits for her mother’s trial – she is the star witness – she begins to be consumed by guilt from the secrets she’s keeping from everyone. Will she be able to control herself and be the good girl that she wants to be, or will she revert to how her mother was?
This book was a page turner! It’s not a fast paced thriller with a ton of twists and turns, but it’s a suspense that dives deep into the mind of a troubled teenager. We spend the entire story in the perspective of Milly, and Land does a phenomenal job pulling the reader in and bringing us through a maze of Milly’s upbringing. This is definitely more character driven than plot driven. Land’s background in child mental health shines through – she clearly knows what she’s writing about!
Overall, if you want a chilling read that dives deep into the mind of the main character, then this is the one for you! It does have a slower pace, but that doesn’t take away from the memorable and complex main character or the events that happen.
Do you prefer a plot or character driven story?
