The Wife – Alafair Burke

Happy belated release!

Thanks to Harper Books for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

THE WIFE – Alafair Burke (out now!)

My Thoughts: 5/5 stars!

I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about Alafair Burke and her writing, so I was very excited to start with THE WIFE. A domestic drama sprinkled with some courtroom drama made for an addictive read!

In East Hampton, Angela and Jason met at a party that she was catering. She figured that this would be nothing besides a quick fling for the summer, however to her surprise Jason proposed to her a year later. This was a new start for Angela and her son, they can start over in Manhattan and leave her past behind. Fast forward six years – Jason, an economics professor at NYU, now has a best selling book and he continues to grow in the spotlight. When a college intern steps forward about an incident that occurred involving Jason, Angela’s life starts to spiral. When the investigation and allegations are leaked to the press another woman steps forward about an incident with Jason.

Angela is determined to get to the bottom of things and prove her husband’s innocence. The deeper she digs the more she begins to question that man she married. Will she be able to keep her past secrets safe when she is asked to take the stand in his defense?

I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll leave it there. This is complex story that jumps between perspectives. The characters and events felt so real and relevant to current events. I love when authors can make their fiction feel authentic and completely believable with life-like and flawed characters. The ending was fantastic. As if the book didn’t pull you in enough, that last chapter was incredible!

I will be going back to read more of Alafair Burke’s backlog! I loved this domestic thriller meets courtroom drama and completely understand the hype around it.
