BURY THE LEAD – Archer Mayor (out now!)
More beautiful black and blue covers this fall.
My Thoughts: 4/5 stars!
Going into this I knew it was pretty far into the Joe Gunther series, but I had no idea it was book twenty nine (yes, 29!). However, BURY THE LEAD, read perfectly as a standalone. The author does a great job bringing the readers up to speed on the characters and introducing them without having to go into too much detail (for those returning to the series). There wasn’t a point where I felt lost or confused between the characters.
The body of a young woman is found near a popular skiing trail and the VBI (Vermont Bureau of Investigation) is on the case. Mick Durocher is quickly apprehended and confesses to the murder immediately – easy case, right? It almost seems too easy to Joe Gunther and his team. Is there more going on than they realize?
Meanwhile, a local business becomes the target of numerous acts of vandalism, with each getting more destructive than the last. Not only is there extreme amounts of property damage, but it also results in death. It comes to light that Durocher was once employed there, is this simply just a coincidence?
I really enjoyed this crime fiction novel and going through the investigation with Gunther and his team. This wasn’t too heavy in the procedural aspect like some novels can be. It did start out a little slower but the pacing definitely picked up and had me hooked. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more books in the series the next time I’m at the bookstore!
