THE DEATH MESSENGER – Mari Hannah (out now!)

This is book two in the Matthew Ryan series – you can see my thoughts on book one (THE SILENT ROOM) here!

My Thoughts: 4/5 stars!

I will always love when a series continues strong! THE DEATH MESSENGER is book two in the Matthew Ryan series and I was pleasantly surprised that this was on par with book one. I’ve had a few books in crime fiction series where book two just kind of falls flat or acts as a filler for the series, but that is not the case here!

A mysterious DVD is delivered to the Northumbria Police Headquarters, and it’s contents are truly disturbing. No visible victim, no clues as to the location, just a bloody scene and a chilling and eerie female narrator. This is just the first in a string of shocking videos delivered around the country. There doesn’t seem to be any connection between the victims and they’re running out of time to catch the killer before more bodies turn up.

I don’t want to go into too much more detail and spoil anything, but this is a suspenseful ride! I know for some readers it had a lull in parts but I felt that the pacing was consistent throughout. I loved that Hannah was able to flesh out the characters more and I really think that this could be read as a standalone. I enjoyed being reintroduced to the characters without it being repetitive from book one. Also, the thought of a female serial killer is incredible, having that unexpected female narration was a great touch. I feel like that isn’t done enough – but you’ll have to read and find out!

If you’re looking for a suspenseful and well-written crime fiction thriller, then you’ll definitely want to pick up THE SILENT ROOM and THE DEATH MESSENGER.
