ASHES OF REVIVAL – Alex Shobe (out now!)

This is book one in the new Abdicate Series

AshesOfRevival

Book Description:

I was born to be a queen, but I was taught to be obedient.

Week after week, I watch as villagers fight to the death in the arena. Barbarians. Not the ones who cling to life as their blood turns the sand red. No. I’m talking about the nobles who cheer and shake hands from well-placed bets.

It’s my reign. My throne. My decision to free those enslaved to the games.

Will my nobles approve of it? No. But what’s the worst that could happen?

My Thoughts: 3/5 stars

This is the first book in the new Abdicate series from Alex Shobe. I found it very interesting seeing it described as a historical fantasy book, because I don’t really pick up that genre pairing before. I also want to preface this with the warning that there is some graphic violence in parts of the book, strong language, and some implied sex scenes – so just know that going into it!

There were things that I really enjoyed about this book and other things that didn’t really work for me as a reader. That being said, I feel like some of it could be addressed in the next books in the series. While we got some character development I feel like the author could have gone more in depth with them – it was almost like we just scratched the surface of some of their motivations and relationships. Again, this could be expanded on in the next books.

There is plenty of action in the beginning and the end, but there is a little bit of a slow down in the middle. I really enjoyed how Shobe set the scene for us. I always love when authors can transport you into the time period and location where the characters are so that you can experience the events with them.

A solid 3 stars from me, which is not a negative thing. I know some reviewers/authors see 3 stars and think it’s bad. I enjoyed parts and had some issues with others, but I feel like they could be addressed in future installments for this series. I’d be curious to see where this leads!

A Little Bit About the Author:

She spends her days answering 911 calls, and at night, she use the stories and personalities she come across on the calls as inspiration for plot/characters in her novels. Alex currently resides in Indiana.
