THE GOLDEN COUPLE – Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen (Released March 8th, 2022)
Wealthy Washington suburbanites Marissa and Matthew Bishop seem to have it all—until Marissa is unfaithful. Beneath their veneer of perfection is a relationship riven by work and a lack of intimacy. She wants to repair things for the sake of their eight-year-old son and because she loves her husband. Enter Avery Chambers.
Avery is a therapist who lost her professional license. Still, it doesn’t stop her from counseling those in crisis, though they have to adhere to her unorthodox methods. And the Bishops are desperate.
When they glide through Avery’s door and Marissa reveals her infidelity, all three are set on a collision course. Because the biggest secrets in the room are still hidden, and it’s no longer simply a marriage that’s in danger.
Chandra’s Thoughts: 4/5 stars
Well look at me actually reading an ARC way before the release date! *pats myself on the back* 🤣 Greer & Sarah really know how to engage the reader and I spent the majority of my evening last night sipping whiskey and reading 80% of the book. Why didn’t I finish it last night? Too much whiskey… oopsie. I was glued to the pages though!
I don’t think this book has the panache that their other works have but I appreciate this being more suspenseful and less in your face. I’m not sure how ethical it is for a therapist (Avery) who has lost her license to continue to help people but I suppose if her clients know that she is unlicensed then who am I to judge? This ten step program she has seems a bit odd as is her crossing boundaries she probably shouldn’t. BUT, I do love the idea of all of this. I will say that there were far too many characters involved but I absolutely didn’t see the final resolution coming. Bow tied too neatly but still looks good, if you know what I mean.
I definitely like Avery’s character once I got to know her. But my favorites were Bennett and Roman. Once again these authors bring us an easy to read, well written book. While this is slower paced than their other works, we still receive a layered, more character than plot driven story that I found very entertaining. Every marriage has secrets. Every person has secrets. What are YOU hiding? Grab that popcorn, an adult beverage and a dozen roses, or a tin of nuts. 😉 This will have you looking at therapy in a new way.. and just might get you to go rescue a pet.
My Thoughts: 5/5 stars
Yet another incredible book from the duo that is Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. THE GOLDEN COUPLE was so difficult to put down and, just like their previous books, there were plenty of moments I found myself whispering “what the fuck” and in the best way possible. If the synopsis piques your interest in any way, then do yourself a favor and get this book.
As with their other books I don’t want to risk spoiling any of the plot, so I’ll try to keep it short and sweet. We get two alternating POVs, Marissa and Avery. Marissa has a secret she’s keeping from her husband and is seeking the help of a therapist. Avery has recently lost her license but her unorthodox methods are known to be life changing. Her ten session approach is intense and is meant to push the boundaries but she couldn’t have imagined what she was getting involved in when Marissa and Matthew Bishop walked into her office. What seemed like a simple infidelity confession has turned into something much more dangerous.
What I love about their books is that after each Part there’s always some revelation that makes you completely reevaluate what you thought was happening. There were so many working pieces and they all worked together so well without feeling rushed or disjointed. I think the pacing was consistent and the short chapters are always my downfall for “just one more”. This author duo is firmly an auto-buy for me and I’ll continue to snatch up anything they release.
