A big thanks to the author, H.A. Leuschel, for the copy in exchange for my honest review!
MANIPULATED LIVES is a collection of 5 short stories that all include the element of manipulation. Whether its from the point of view of the manipulator or the manipulated, these stories pack an eerie and psychologically scary punch.
My Thoughts: 4.5/5 stars!
I’ve always been a big fan of short stories. I love when an author can really pack a punch in a short amount of time. I know a lot of people aren’t fans of short stories because they want more, but I can definitely admire the stories that get everything out in a short amount of time. MANIPULATED LIVES by H.A. Leuschel outlines those affected by manipulators in their lives, as well as the psychological side effects the victims experience. The five short stories include, The Narcissist, Tess and Tattoos, The Spell, Runaway Girl and My Perfect Child.
The research that went into the psychological aspect of these stories is very evident. The author constructed these stories so well and they felt incredibly real. Leuschel had a great variety when it came to the characters. We get to see men and women of varying ages and backgrounds and how they’re being manipulated by these tormentors in their lives. All of these stories outline the abuse that the victims endure on a daily basis.
I think what made this feel so real and, at times, scary is that these people were just trying to lead normal lives. This can literally happen to anyone, and could be happening right now to people we know. Throughout our own lives we’ll probably cross paths with these master manipulators and hopefully we’ll be able to stay out of their grasp.
If you want a set of realistic psychological thrillers, then you need to pick up a copy! These stories were unnerving, dark, thought provoking, and tense, with the research to back them up.
This is definitely different from most psychological thrillers, but it’s one I definitely think needs to be read by those interested in psychology.
