Book Description:

Bestselling author Lisa Gardner unites three of her most loved characters -Detective D.D. Warren, Flora Dane, and Kimberly Quincy – in a twisty new thriller, as they investigate a mysterious murder from the past that points to a dangerous and chilling present-day crime.

FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy and Sergeant Detective DD Warren have built a task force to follow the digital bread crumbs left behind by deceased serial kidnapper Jacob Ness. And when a disturbing piece of evidence comes to light, they decide to bring in Flora Dane who has personal experience of being imprisoned by Ness.

Their investigations take them to a small town deep in the hills of Georgia where something seems to be deeply wrong.

What at first seems like a Gothic eeriness soon hardens into something much more sinister as they discover that for all the evil Jacob committed while alive, his worst secret is still to be revealed.

Quincy and DD must summon their considerable skills and experience to crack the most disturbing case of their careers – and Flora must face her own past directly in the hope of saving others.

Chandra’s Thoughts: 4/5 stars

As someone who prefers to start series with book one, I remember going into Book 8 of this series without realizing it and was instantly hooked. This is my 4th D.D. Warren book and each one has been pulse increasing while simultaneously touching my heart. While I always recommend starting a series from the beginning, these can definitely be read as stand alones… however, watching these characters grow even just from book 8 makes me want to go back to the beginning so I can get a full, more rounded understanding.

I’m absolutely thrilled to have been back with D.D., Kimberly and Flora. They’re taken to a small town with ties to Jacob, who although dead, still haunts each of them. We get further insight to Flora and her dealing when she was his victim. We get introduced to a new character who, by the time I finished the book, had unknowingly gripped my heart. Revelations come about, things are (as usual) not quite what they seem and we are once again rooting for the good guys to win.

I can’t recommend this series more. Gardner writes with such finesse and truly brings the reader into this world. I came, I read, I felt.

My Thoughts: 4/5 stars

This is my fourth book in the D.D. Warren series and while I started late in the series, I’ve loved every installment I’ve picked up so far. WHEN YOU SEE ME was no different. The best part? This one brings together not only D.D. Warren and Flora, but we also get Agent Kimberly Quincy in on the action as they try to solve crimes from a sadistic killer from their past.

In true Gardner fashion, this book has short and quick chapters, alternating POVs, and a dark and twisted case for our investigators. While this can be read as a standalone, I think you would get more enjoyment out of it with at least a little background information on the characters. Flora must face her past with Jacob Ness when more bodies are found of people that were believed to have been his victims. Was he truly working alone? Is there someone else out there?

Lots of suspense, an intricately woven mystery, and plenty to keep you on your toes. Gardner never disappoints and I will continue to pick up books she releases – especially if it’s this combination of bad ass ladies. If you want to start a new crime series, look no further!
