The Carnage We Keep is a fully standalone dark mafia romance. No previous books in the Jagger Cole Universe need to be read before diving into this book or series. Readers are HIGHLY advised to read the TW inside.
My Thoughts: 5/5 stars
Now, normally we get one solidly unhinged main character, usually the MMC. However, Jagger Cole gives us two delightfully unhinged characters and they’re forced into marrying each other? A man who needs to be in control and has his rules and a woman who refuses to be tamed and can be particularly violent. Damiano and Bella are a match made in twisted dark mafia romance heaven.
The page count seems intimidating, but I promise you that you’ll fly through it. That’s one thing I will always love about Jagger Cole’s books – the pacing is always perfect, the chapters short enough to keep you stuck in the “just one more chapter” mentality, characters compelling enough, and the right amount of spice. Bella and Damiano are both killers for their respective families and approach their jobs in completely different ways. The banter, the chemistry, the tension, the slight disdain for each other, and the added competitive nature makes for a fun read. When someone threatens their families, they are forced to do what’s best and get married to form a unified front.
Considering their jobs within the mafia, there are some gruesome and bloody scenes. Like, more so than most dark mafia romance books. So please keep that in mind when starting and check those content warnings! Despite all of the violence, this story is incredibly emotional, even more so than I was anticipating. Who knew the author could make you ache for these murderous characters? The page count is worth it and I loved that ending. While you don’t have to read the other two books, I highly recommend you do, because it’s an incredibly addicting series.
